A front or rear hydraulic disc brake set from Magura — the German brake maker whose kit turns up on everything from city commuters to World Cup downhill bikes. The MT4 is the workhorse of the MT range: not the lightest, not the flashiest, just consistently strong and very hard to kill.

You get a single brakeset  — for the front OR for the rear - the MT4 is universal and can be fitted either way up, to either end of the bike. 

The lever body is Magura's Carbotecture composite — a fibre-reinforced material that survives crashes better than machined aluminium and shaves weight at the same time. Behind it sits a one-piece forged aluminium 2-piston calliper, which resists flex under hard braking far better than a bolted two-part body.

Reach is adjustable with a T25 torx key, so you can set the lever where your fingers actually are rather than living with the factory position. And because Magura run mineral oil rather than DOT fluid, bleeding is a far less unpleasant job — it won't strip paint or burn skin.

At around 230g per brake this is a sensible everyday weight, and the MDP 7 organic pads give quiet, progressive bite from cold. A genuine step up from entry-level Shimano or Tektro on a commuter, tourer, hardtail or e-bike.
