Salvaged Aqua Signal PMEL 111 Explosion-Proof Strip Light
A substantial explosion-proof strip light, type PMEL 111, made in Germany by Ahlemann + Schlatter of Bremen under the Aqua Signal name. Designed for hazardous marine and industrial environments where reliability was critical.
The fitting is built around a heavy polished cast aluminium body with a thick glass tube protected by a full cage of stainless steel rods and stacked steel guard rings. Two brass cable glands, a three-armed cast aluminium top cap and exposed fasteners give it a distinctive mid-century industrial look that modern decorative lighting cannot replicate.
The original manufacturer's plate is still fitted, showing the model, explosion-protection markings and ratings. The fitting was made for twin 20W fluorescent tubes (2 x 20W). At over a metre long and 16kg, it has real presence and suits large kitchens, bars, workshops, loft spaces, restaurants and commercial interiors.
The integrated mounting brackets allow the fitting to be wall mounted or installed flush to a ceiling.
